Tommy spent over 34 years beginning in 1988 in the information technology field specializing in communication, collaboration, and security technologies. In 1978 he began serving as a youth counselor for a Raleigh YMCA outreach program and then in 1980 became the Physical Director with the Raleigh YMCA on Hillsborough Street — Barney Fife's "Y" — directing adult physical and recreational programs. He also volunteered nearly a decade of time with the North Carolina Youth Rugby Union, coaching youth and high school rugby, as well as serving on the board of the Raleigh Rugby Football Club, Inc.
